Energinet will expand the existing high-voltage substation at Kassø in the coming years, and Caverion has been given responsibility for the establishment of a 400 kV AIS substation, which will replace the current station, as well as two new 150 kV substations.
Today the area covers about 12 hectares. After the expansion, the total area will comprise approximately 135 hectares, of which the electrical installations will occupy approximately 50 hectares. The remaining approximately 85 hectares will be used, among other things, for recreational areas.
There are great forces at play.
Kassø high-voltage substation is already one of Denmark's most important nodes in the transmission grid with connections to Germany, among other places. Therefore, the station is important for the energy infrastructure, which will support the electrification of society and the continued expansion of renewable energy.
“There are great forces at stake, and it is exciting to be allowed to contribute to such a significant and historic project in the Danish transmission grid. The expansion of Kassø is precisely the type of project where our high-voltage competencies come into their own. It is a large and complex task where safety, quality and strong project implementation must go hand in hand. "I am proud of the trust Energinet has shown us, and we look forward to bringing our experience and expertise to bear on one of the most significant high-voltage projects in Denmark," says department manager Thomas Bjerregaard.
When the station is completed, Kassø will be able to handle significantly larger amounts of electricity from, among other things, wind and solar energy and distribute the electricity efficiently through the transmission grid.
"Construction work at the new high-voltage substation in Kassø is progressing according to plan after the first sod was turned in the spring of 2026." With more renewable energy and growing electricity consumption across society, there is a need for a strong and flexible transmission grid that can ensure security of supply and support the continued electrification of Denmark. The expansion of Station Kassø is an important element in the green transition and a key investment in a robust and future-proof electricity system that can ensure that green electricity reaches consumers,” says Nina Høegh Jensen, Director of Electricity Transmission at Energinet.
Caverion lifts complex infrastructure projects
The award of the project underlines Caverion's strong position within high-voltage plants and critical energy infrastructure.
“It makes me proud that we have been chosen for an important project of this size. It is a recognition of the quality and professionalism that our employees deliver every day. "The result is created by our fitters, project managers, specialists and managers, who together make it possible to lift some of Denmark's most complex infrastructure projects," concludes Director of High Voltage, Klaus Kjeldsen.
The project at Kassø is added to the series of large energy infrastructure projects that Caverion is helping to realize.
The project has a contact value of approximately DKK 67 million and is expected to start in February 2027 and be implemented over the coming years.
